Sports Malaise

i'm sure some of it is carryover from the poor eagles season and some of it is because i'm swamped with work right now, but man, am i feeling a whole lot of... i don't know... indifference toward sports right now.

and it's not just that the sixers suck and the flyers are going nowhere... it's not that the winter olympics is the oddest collection of contrived contests around... it's not that winners of both the superbowl and the nba dunk contest were seemingly predetermined... it's not that pitchers and catchers just reported and already brett myers is yapping about something or other... well maybe it is all those things.

yucky, yucky, yuck, yuck. nfl draft is the only thing on the near horizon.

Maybe I can shed some light on this because I am feeling the same way. This time of year, in my opinion, is just BAD. Especially if the Eagles don't do well. You have the post-Super Bowl blues and basketball and hockey are not in the important play-off runs. The Flyers, who were hot out of the gate have cooled off and are starting to play typical Flyer hockey. To me, however, they are the only bright light in this city. I think that they will make a serious run and Nittymaki could be great down the stretch. However, history has dictated that the Flyers will lose in the second round to Ottawa, Buffalo, Carolina or Tampa. And I think that we all expect that it will happen. The Sixers are just dreadful. I was reading yesterday that Snider can't believe that the fans are not giving this team a break and that King and Cheeks are basically untouchable and safe with their jobs. That is so depressing. This is basically an organization that has been in disarray since 1983, except for a couple years with Croce and the Devil. The Sixers are going nowhere and it doesn't take a basketball guru to see that they lack personnel to make any kind of important run. I am cautiously optomistic with the Phils, but this is another team that has just played good enough to come in second and make no chance at a title. I don't see that changing this year and neither does their GM. And the Eagles, who I bleed for, have been very quiet with their plans for next season. Everything that I have read and seen or read indicates that last year was a fluke and next year, by getting healthy they will be back on top. Uh, when I watched the Eagles when they were relatively healthy last year they were pretty mediocre. They couldn't run, Donovan looked like he lost his dog all year, and their defense was very suspect. I don't know if keeping the course and getting healthy is the answer. It helps, especially with Donovan, but they need some personnel tweaking. I remember with Head Wade, every year he thought they were going to the World Series, but that was really contingent on all starters and the staff having great years. So on paper they looked good, but in practice not everyone was going to have a banner year. That reminds me of what the Eagles sound like they are doing. However, they play their cards close to their vest so I have no idea what their plans are.

Throw in the indiffenece with the Winter Olympics which I hate even more than the Summer Olympics and another year without a champion in Philly and you have the perfect storm of malaise. It doesn't help that we debate it and talk about it on-line so frequently either.

Yeah it was. I have too much time on my hands. I probably am more distraught than the organizations and players themselves.

So apparently I'm not the only one with these thoughts too. Sigh.
