Game 16 Thoughts

some good and lots of bad in today's game. overall, i thought the team played hard and took it to the skins, but in the end the lack of offensive talent cost the team a win.

- 6 turnovers, holy crap. a fitting end to this season i guess.

- did mcmullen and wynn cost themselves roster spots yesterday? even if you discount his fumble, mcmullen just struggles to catch the ball. he fights the ball into his hands and double clutches everythings. is that something you can work through? wynn isn't a good enough corner to merit a roster spot if he isn't a difference maker as a return guy.

- i certainly hope parry finally cost himself a roster spot -- 2 false starts yesterday and one that called back a touchdown.

- there is no reason for reno mahe to be on this team next season. anything reno can do, bruce perry can do better.

- not that he was playing well, but why did andy pull mcmahon at the end? not quite sure i understand the motivation for that.

- looks like the birds will pick between 11th and 14th depending on reverse strength of schedule.

I read in the paper this morning that the Eagles are in the 14th spot.

It's good to get back on the log. The Eagles will be under my scrutiny from now until final cuts in September...then of course under my extreme scrutiny during the season. Wow, the Eagles gave Heckert the puppet title of GM. That can be looked at 2 ways....the positive way meaning that Andy will be able to divest some responsibility or the negative way meaning that it will be the exact same thing next year. I actually look at it in the positive.

One of the things that has confused me for some time is the whole thing of Childress being a head coach in this league. Why? I am not on the field or part of the organization, but from an outsider's perspective, why would you be interested in him? It is obvious that Reid runs the offense. It's also obvious that Mohrniweg has a big part too. So what is up with all of the passion with Brad. This is not to say he is not capable, but I don't even think of him when I think of the Eagles offense. He is basically a puppet title, too. Let's not kid ourselves, either. Andy is a dictator. There will be no veteran coordinator that comes in to fix this mess. He probably will let Mohrniweg be the O-Coordinator. And also be a puppet.

I am very concerned with this team, to be honest. I was at the Redskins game. I honestly thought the Eagles played hard, but they are not very good. I unfortunately listened to 610 on the way in today and that usually raises my ire. The worst thing that can be done this off-season is to blame injuries for this lost season. This team was mediocre at best if the team had all starters playing. Check that, if Donovan was healthy this year, that may have been different. Fully healthy and not hobbled by a sports hernia from game one. If that is the case, they may have actually been okay. What that injury did do, though, is point out some of our weaknesses. What really alarms me is how bad they were on the defensive side. Not to re-hash what has been said time and time again on this site is that they are in dire need of a DT that can collapse the pocket. They also need to be able to put Jones on the weakside and get a starting strong side LB. They got zero sacks and fumble recoveries from their OLBs this year and only 1 pick. As a team they only had 29 sacks, too. No pressure.

The one thing that I tend to disagree with now is the state of the QB situation. If Donovan goes down again, which he has pretty much done twice so far, we can't flush the season down the toilet. I think that we do need to in fact get a competent veteran back-up and I would really like to see the Eagles draft a young QB that can be developed. That is not to say the Don is not the man for the forseeable future, but I can't have another season like this, waiting for this cancer patient to die.

610 also speculated that Reid implied at a recent press conference that injuries were the cause of the problem this year and next year, if they can get healthy, they will be fine. Not without tweaking they won't. Hopefully they learned from mistakes with some players what they can't do.

Why can't Westbrook be like Tiki? Right now, Tiki is probably the most exciting back around, outside of Larry Johnson. Maybe with some weight room work this can become a reality.

I would trade Moats right now. I don't think that there is enough touches for him in this offense. Did Gordon get any touches at the end of this year? I agree, with Bruce Perry you no longer need Mahe. Cut Parry, cut Spach, cut Chad Lewis, cut Kalu, cut Mahe, cut McMahon, cut Detmer, cut Adams (or better yet, put him back on special teams), cut cut cut cut....

By the way, Redskins fans are a classless, clueless lot.

Flyers are looking stronger on D. I'm suprised we didn't crush Boston, but their goalie really played freaky good. Our offense seems to be passing crisper, especially on the 2nd line. I think they need to put Brashear on another line because I don't think he's being utilized properly. Then again, take him off that line and you could end up with some disasters because the flyers are a little thin still. Gagne is not even at 70% back from his injury.

i think that mornhinweg was essentially the offensive coordinator this season. remember that mornhinweg is the assistant head coach so he actually ranks ahead of childress on the totem pole. i think the pass heavy game plans were in large part due to marty's influence on the gameplan. childress ran a run heavy offense at wisconson.

i disagree. if don goes down for the year, the season is lost no matter who the backup is (unless it's another top 10 qb). given the fickle nature of the cataldi contingent of eagle nation, i'd say having a strong backup qb is only asking for the trouble. remember how strong the "A! J!" chants were? and that was for a nobody...

westbrook can't be tiki because tiki has a track record of durability, while westbrook does not.

Cut Parry, cut Spach, cut Chad Lewis, cut Kalu, cut Mahe, cut McMahon, cut Detmer, cut Adams (or better yet, put him back on special teams), cut cut cut cut....

but don't go overboard with cutting. i wouldn't cut more than a few players from this team. they just need to add some difference makers in the right positions.

Fair enough. I think that we will have to agree to disagree with the QB situation. You can't have Don as a single point failure for your city's team. I agree with what you are saying about the Boo Birds and I also would be hesitant about spending a lot of money on someone who theoretically is not going to play. You can't win with McMahon and Koy. I think we need to have someone we at least have a semblance of a chance with....I would be interested to see how the market will play out. I don't think the answer is to sign Kerry Collins, but you have no shot with who they have now. I don't think Warner is a bad option...probably not too expensive. We'll see....right now I just can't have another season like this one.

Also, I agree that you can't cut everyone. Actually the guys that I listed is who I would cut. That's only 7 guys and I don't think that you will disagree with any of them.

I guess my point with Westbrook is that Tiki is a small back that can go between the tackles. Let's see what we can do to fix that concern. I think a bigger back is necessary just on occasion at least.

How about Brett Fav-reee. Wouldn't that be fun? People would boo McNabb after the first incompletion without forgetting how truly terrible Fav-reee was this year.

I think Reid brought Detmer in just to show the team that he hadn't quit yet. McTurnover was definitely not going to put any more points on the board.

I heard that McMahon got into a screaming match with coaches on the sideline. Andy was probably like...(throat clear) "uh, Mike, can you stop throwing the ball to the other team, please. (throat clear)...I'm not going to go into it right now, but you are stinking up the place, like a big plate of pork and cheese. Time is yours".

That probably nailed the coffin closed.
