Andy Reid Drafts vs. Other "Top" Teams

UPDATE: updated ratings for logan mankins and shaun phillips.
-----

UPDATE: added colts (good thing because they're looking like the top drafting team of the group). updated ratings for antonio bryant, rob petitti, ovie mughelli, and elvis dumervil.
-----

ok, bumble, here is my first (highly unscientific) pass at rating the drafts of the "top" teams we mutually identified. i've scored every player from every draft since 1999 for the eagles, cowboys, broncos, patriots, steelers, chargers, and ravens using this scale:

1 - insignificant
2 - good backup to below average starter
3 - decent starter to good starter
4 - pro-bowl caliber player
5 - superstar

i'll post the summary and analysis after people have had a chance to critique the scores i've assigned to the players.

NOTE: 2007 drafts are not scored as it's too early to judge those players and all kickers are excluded as i don't believe they are relevant to this analysis

Michael Lewis played in the Pro Bowl in 2005. Doesn't that make him Pro Bowl caliber?

Not agreeing with your insignificant rating on some players. Maybe you need another category. Insignificant to me means that they didn't play a single down, or if they did, lasted only a few games.

Ryan Moats is only a little more than insignificant, but he did play in 15 games over 2 seasons - even scoring 3 TDs.

here's my thinking on that. yes, michael lewis made the pro-bowl, but i've always thought sheldon brown was the better player. since it seemed overly generous to list all 4 of the guys from that draft as pro-bowl caliber, i dropped michael lewis.

does it really matter that moats played? unless a player played fairly consistently, i think he's likely interchangeable with a lot of guys that eventually get cut from teams.

i once read something where a coach was saying that the last 5 guys on the team are the hardest to pick because there are a ton of guys who are all roughly the same player.

my focus here is on who's getting the best players as opposed to who's drafting ryan moats instead of cj gaddis.

which players specifically do you disagree with?

yeah, i thought of them and in my list i'd have probably put them in place of the broncos (who i perceived to do a terrible job at drafting), but i had to balance that with the fact that i am lazy, so i chose to add the ravens over the colts.

my top five teams would have been: patriots, eagles, steelers, colts, ravens

A few players who I noticed:

Elvis Dumervil - had 8.5 sacks in 13 games last season, has two already this year. I'd say a 3 w/ 4 upside.

Ovie Mughelli - started at FB for the Ravens, now for Atlanta. Atlanta gave him the biggest contract ever for a FB, probably a 3.

Rob Petiti -sucks, but was a starter for 2 seasons

Antonio Bryant -sucks, but started in a few places and had a few decent seasons

That said, really good job on these. I thought Plex and Ben Roeth had made Pro Bowls, turns out they haven't. Good work on a tough job.

yeah, was probably too tough on bryant and pettiti. they sucked, but they had significance.

updated ovie and elvis. good names too.

I applaud you for all the work that went into this. And though it's probably too late to matter, as someone who follows the Cowboys closely I'd like to quibble with a few of your ratings on Cowboys players from recent drafts. (Your assessment of the putrid pre-Parcells drafts is spot on, though.)

First, Julius Jones vs. Marion Barber. Yes, technically Jones is the starter, but everyone can see now that the true #1 RB on the team is Barber. He's tougher, has a much higher yards-per-carry average, and gets the more significant carries in each game. At the least, I'd reverse their rankings and make Barber a 3 and Jones a 2 or a marginal 3.

Similarly with Marcus Spears and Chris Canty -- most Cowboys watchers would reverse their rankings. Canty is much more solid; Spears will disappear from entire games and is considered a bigger disappointment so far.

Also, Jay Ratliff cannot be an "insignificant" 1 -- he's currently the starting nose tackle due to Jason Ferguson's injury, and beyond that, he's been throughout his career a great pass rusher in the nickel. Has a much better motor and tenacity and is more disruptive than Spears (a lot of us think Ratliff should've been starting over Spears last year). He's at least a 2, if not a 3. Just a better player than Spears, despite their respective draft positions.

Finally, keep an eye on Pat McQuistan, who will turn out to be another Parcells late round find. He's a solid backup now (definitely not a 1) and the team will probably let Flozell Adams walk in free agency after this year b/c McQuistan will be ready to take over as the starting left tackle.
